OGCE

04 OGC (Europe) Ltd. (UK)

The Open Geospatial Consortium (Europe) Limited (OGCE) was formed in 2001, organized and operated as a non-stock, not for profit company limited by guarantee under The Companies Act 1985 of England and Wales and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. OGCE’s purpose is to conduct business in Europe on behalf of OGC’s mission, goals and objectives, with a focus on take up and adoption services and market education and covers:

  • Promoting the development and use of advanced open systems standards and techniques to enable the full integration of geospatial data and geoprocessing resources into mainstream computing and widespread use of interoperable, commercial geoprocessing software throughout the global information infrastructure
  • Representing the European-based membership of OGC in membership organizations/associations in Europe with similar vision and mission to that of the OGCE, including agencies, collaborators and affiliates of the European Commission.

OGCE meets Europe’s interoperability challenges by addressing the following general business objectives:

  • Drive take up & adoption of interoperable geoprocessing in Europe based on user driven requirements that can be addressed with OGC’s adopted principles and practices for architecture, OpenGIS specifications, and standards-based, commercial-off-the-shelf (SCOTS) software engineering development processes;
  • Assist European organisations in supporting, monitoring and managing programs where interoperability is a focus or an inherent requirement; and
  • Facilitate enhancement of OpenGIS specifications via the identification of requirements, initiative sponsors and participants from Europe for OGC activities including global test beds and pilots and specification working groups.

Other IPs with OGC's participation:

OGCE has so far participated in the EC FP5 Projects ETEMII, GETIS and GINIE, the EC FP6 Integrated Project ORCHESTRA and has carried out a number of projects for the European Union Satellite Centre, the Joint Research Centre, the European Space Agency and the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya.
